Okay, I'm sure Robert Naiman means well (at ZNet) but his idea is just nuts so we'll make him this week's Dumb Ass of the Week. Here's an excerpt:
From now on, when the country is at war, there shall be a national service draft. Every resident of America, male and female, documented and undocumented, who is in the age range of those eligible to volunteer to serve in our armed forces shall be required to make themselves available for national service, military or civilian.
No one will be compelled to participate in military service. A person called to national service who does not want or is not able, for whatever reason, to participate in military service, will be given a civilian assignment. The term of service, and the pay and benefits, including educational benefits, of the civilian service, will be similar to that for soldiers who do not receive pay or benefits specifically linked to combat service.
In other words: during wartime, no one will be compelled to participate in combat, but one may be compelled to give up as much time as a soldier does. Furthermore, to the extent practical, the civilian service will be designed to bring those not participating in military service into contact with those serving in the military and with the human costs of war. National service draft civilians will be assigned, for example, to serve at VA hospitals. National service draft civilians will be assigned to help provide day care and other support services to military families.
Because no one will be compelled to participate in the military, we will still have an all-volunteer military, as the Pentagon wants.
Let's say Robert's idea went through tomorrow, okay? And I'm 'drafted.' I say I don't want to serve in the illegal wars. Robert's plan is I do civilian draft.
But I DON'T WANT TO SERVE IN THE ILLEGAL WARS.
Does Robert not get that?
Does he not get that my being enforced/enslaved labor for the government to use as it wants is helping their illegal war effort?
By controlling me -- see me as a means of production (Marx) -- they are using me to continue the wars. How can Robert miss that?
Now he doesn't think this is going to happen, he doesn't think a draft is feasible. But his idea isn't either. If I'm put to work by the government -- military or civilian -- so they can fight their war then I am tool used to continue the illegal war.
Okay, let's talk Fringe.
This was a better episode in that there were chases and fights and dying.
All of that let you pretend something was happening.
But I stand by what I said already, we love Oliva. So this fake Olivia pretending to be her? It's not cutting it.
At least the episode it was made clear that Joshua Jackson's character Peter should be able to tell Olivia.
Astrid had some nice moments. But the bloody gash they gave Walter (on the head) when a shape shifter attacked him? That was really too bloody. Walter's not all there and we like him and we don't want to see something like that.
So each episode will apparently rotate with Olivia real and Olivia fake. We'll get Olivia real in the alternate world and fake Olivia in ours. And it's just not going to work.
Fake Olivia's not interesting. The whole point of her story is she's not Olivia so when do they catch on?
You can only play that for so long before the audience gets ticked off and angry.
They should just stay with real Olivia trapped on the alternate world.
But I'm starting to think that real Olivia's going to be trapped there until nearly the end of the season.
You really can't split the cast of a popular show up like that. If they're not careful, half-way into this season, people will be referring to it as the season the show jumped the shark.
The good news is next week should be real Olivia. So that should be worth watching.
