No, of course not. I'm sorry he felt he had to ask. Since Rebecca had her baby (and really during the pregnancy as well -- that was five years ago, wow), C.I.'s been ending each week on the road (and all but about 6 weeks a year -- if that many -- are on the road) here to see the baby and spend a little time with her. (She's one of the little girl's godmothers, of course.) And sometimes, if they're in DC for a couple of days, she'll go over to Nantucket or Rebecca'll go over to DC and C.I. will just take the little girl around DC with her. But when all that started happening, Saturday early morning runs just became what we did. When she'd come through prior to that, whatever day, we'd always run so we just ended up making it a Saturday morning thing. Now in 2008, Wally was on the road campaigning for Hillary -- he went everywhere. And every state he worked, Hillary won. :D As Marcia points out, Wally was Hillary's secret weapon. So after Puerto Rico (last primary), Wally tagged along on the road. He had, give the Wallster some heavy credit, he had dropped out of college to campaign. He was for Hillary, I forget when, in 2007. And he did a little bit of work in Florida (his home state -- which she won) and then saw all the attacks start up. So he asked C.I. what he could do for Hillary and C.I. wasn't in the campaigns, she was staying out of it. But she made a few phone calls -- this was right before New Hampshire -- and a lot of people -- including some of her very good friends -- were going to Texas to try to help build support for Hillary. So she asked Wally if he wanted to do that? And she thought it was like for the weekend.
But Wally meant full time. So when C.I. found out that Wally was going to put college on hold to do his part for Hillary, she set him up with a number of friends and contacts in Texas Democratic politics and he rented a car (he'll tell you C.I. footed the bill for all expenses but C.I. will leave that out and be mad that I included it but she deserves credit for that) and basically worked the whole state. He was giving us, at Third, on the ground reports. And it was so different than the lies that you were hearing from the media. And Cedric thought that sounded fun and he had about two weeks to a month he could take off, so he used that to go down to Texas and campaign with Wally (again, they both say "thank you" to C.I.). And Ava and C.I. were in out of Texas now as well.
And I want to clear something up about that because every now and then I'll get an e-mail about how we're all rabid Hillary supporters. Betty came out for Hillary early in 2007. How not rabid supporters of Hillary were we?
C.I. had to contact each of us individually and say, "Betty's going to announce she's supporting Hillary. Whether you agree with her or not, support Betty. This means a lot to her and she's struggled with her decision." That's when there was a full slate of candidates and a lot of little War Whores. Dennis Kucinich? You were a War Whore. I have not forgotten you or you little toy army of soldiers clearing the path for Barack.
Now I was leaning towards John Edwards because of his populist message. And Wally was too and Cedric was torn between Edwards and Hillary. (He'd explored Barack already and found him grossly wanting.) Then debates started and that's when it became obvious SEXIST TERM WARNING that Edwards just wasn't going to man up.
I'm sorry to use "man up," but that's the only way to describe, from a male point of view, what it was like to agree with Edwards' positions but to watch him be so weak and timid in the debates. Weak and timid? Oh, he could and did go to town on Hillary -- usually he and Barack would tag-team her. But he was such a little bitch when it came to Barack.
So as late as Iowa, Ava and C.I. still weren't choosing sides. They were staying out of it. Doubt it? C.I. loathes Dennis Kucinich (because he talks big but never follows up) and she loathes John Edwards (due to many things including a clumsy pass Edwards made towards her when he was first going for the Dem nomination). We didn't know. (Rebecca knew and Elaine knew because they've known C.I. forever -- the three of them go all the way back to college -- and Elaine and C.I. go back a little bit earlier because C.I. dated Elaine's brother in high school, though Elaine and C.I. would say "Dated? Slept with!") How much did we not know? In May, I think it was, of 2007, a number of women supported Dennis Kucinich -- my mother, Dona and Kat and a lot of them. They did an open letter online about that. C.I.'s only comment then was, "I'm staying out of it." And some of them may not have endorsed if they'd known that not only was she staying out of the race for the nomination but she hated Dennis (because of his stabbing the peace movement in the back with the 2004 DNC convention and other stabs).
And with John Edwards, she never, when I was thinking about supporting him, said, "Mike, the man is a sleaze. I went to meet him early in the campaign and not only did he come on to me, his wife was aware of it." She never did that. And when I thought I might support him, she would be happy for me. (In 2004, she supported John Kerry because she knew him from the antiwar movement during Vietnam and she knew Teresa from her first marriage to the senator who died. She didn't declare until near the last minute. But Elaine was supporting Howard Dean and the two of them are great friends and it was never, ever a problem. Elaine also knows John Kerry from the earlier antiwar movement and when C.I. decided to support him, Elaine sent Kerry's campaign a check and C.I. told her not to do that again, that Elaine believe in Dean and that's who she back all the way. Point being, C.I. really doesn't tell you how to vote. She doesn't do that online and she doesn't do it offline. If you're happy with your vote, she's happy for you. One more story. A friend of her's -- big male movie star -- has a kid that was voting for the first time in 2004 and they were worried, his parents, because he didn't want to talk politics. So one day, C.I.'s over and she knows the kid because he is friends with and grew up with her son. And they end up talking politics. The kid wants to know about a right and a wrong vote. Now at this point, C.I. is firmly supporting Kerry, the Democratic nomination has gone to him. And she explains why that is. And the kid isn't impressed with any of those reasons and so they talk about that and she says, "You know, it sounds like you're someone who could vote for Bush." And he was. And that was his big secret -- his parents had been afraid he was on drugs or that he was gay and afraid to come out to them and that only worried them because they thought that they'd done something wrong as parents if their kid thought he had to hide that from them. So when they got the news that their son was a Republican, they were relieved even though they were lifelong Democrats. But with that kid, C.I. was like, "That's what you believe in, that's who you should support." She wasn't trying to brainwash the kid or 'convert' him.)
I ended up voting for Hillary in my state primary and that was an accident. I had planned to vote on Cynthia McKinney but didn't switch my party i.d. Didn't know I had to. So with about 2 before the day, I decided on Hillary and, when I did, it felt so right. But I had hemmed and hawwed and kept praying -- Wally had long ago given up Edwards -- that Edwards was going to man up and stop letting Barack treating like a little bitch on stage. It really was like the Obama campaign had the dirt on Edwards and blackmailed him to keep him in line and focused on taking out Hillary.
So, no, there was not a plan that we would all get behind Hillary. But we knew Barack was a damn liar.
Elaine's my girlfriend, Barack never had a shot at my vote. When he was running for the senate, Elaine was invited to a big money (she's rich) donors event for Barack. C.I. was going to be visiting so they were going to go to the event together. Which they did. Took their check books (which Elaine will tell you meant she had to take a clutch purse -- C.I. hates to carry anything small that she has to put down somewhere because she's afraid she'll forget it), were thrilled to death to be supporting an antiwar candidate for the US Senate. They'd both agreed they were going to max out with their one checks, write the maximum donation.
And what they knew of Barack was what their friends told them. So they're at the formal event, catching up with various people, working the room that way. And then they get their face time with Candidate Barack. And Elaine tells him that he's got her support and she's just so glad that someone has the courage to stand up -- a lot of people weren't standing up then -- against the Iraq War. (Back then, even Air America Radio was pimping the Iraq War, Rachel Maddow was saying the US had to stay in Iraq.) And Barack does that practiced fake smile he does for the cameras and says that of course the war "was" wrong but now that it's started the US has to stay. Elaine's speechlees. C.I.'s not. C.I.'s pissed. She's like, "Excuse me, are you saying that the US military has to stay in Iraq?" And he's all, "Well, yes, because we're there now." And C.I. tells him he's not antiwar, he's nothing but a coward and she and Elaine storm out.
Now that was his Senate run. And Elaine's shared that story over and over online since 2005 (when she was filling in for Rebecca). She's also written about it in the community newsletters and she talks about it (especially if I'm going, "Tell that story again!"). So there was never anyway I was going to vote for the COWARD Barack. :D (C.I. flipped Dick Cheney off at the end of 2001 or the start of 2002, I forget which. Elaine and C.I. were somewhere when Dick shows up with a party. And Dick's checking them out constantly, letting his eyes wander -- C.I. swears he was studying up on Elaine -- and they're at their table talking about how disgusting Dick Cheney is when C.I. just flips Dick the bird. :D Cheney got red faced and was furious but they were already on their way out. So C.I. has flipped the bird to Cheney and called Barack a coward to his face. :D)
And knowing about Barack's fake "I'm against the war" stand and knowing it long before America was paying attention, I knew he was a con artist, a two-bit liar. That's why, unlike his groupies, I can point out that he hollered he was going to "end the war now!" at his primary campaign rallies but he's been in office for over 2 years and the Iraq War is still going on.
He's a liar.
We would have been so much better off with Hillary in the White House.
That's not speculation, that's fact.
Either she would have done the job she pledged to in the campaign (I think she would have) or we would have held her accountable. Either way, we'd be better off. Now we've got a liar in the White House who can't stop bowing to corporations and putting his mouth around the dick of corporations to service them. And most of us on the left can't even call him out, not even after two years of seeing him lie over and over.
Hillary was the better choice.
Here's C.I.'s "Iraq snapshot:"
