Barack spoke this afternoon. It was not pretty. He's like the Tiny Desk President. :D NPR sometimes has little concerts and they call them the Tiny Desk Concerts. That's how I see Barack. This is from Barry Grey (WSWS):
Obama is set to speak today at George Washington University on his plan for longer-term deficit reduction. The plan, White House officials have said, will call for major cuts in the basic health care programs for the elderly and the poor, Medicare and Medicaid, and give the administration’s backing to talks on cutting back Social Security, the retirement benefit program for seniors.
Obama will present his assault on the basic US social reforms enacted in the 20th century as a “fair” and “reasonable” alternative to the even more brutal proposals being put forward by the Republicans. While reiterating his support for a sharp cut in the corporate tax rate, Obama will call for Bush-era tax cuts for the rich, which the White House extended for two years last December, to be allowed to expire at the end of 2012. This will supposedly demonstrate Obama’s commitment to “shared” sacrifice to reduce the deficit.
The House and Senate, which approved a stop-gap bill late Friday to keep the government operating through April 14, are set to vote Thursday on the agreement that was reached to cut $38.5 billion in domestic spending for the current fiscal year, which ends October 1. This is expected to pass on the basis of votes from most House Republicans.
Barry Grey wrote that before the speech. But he really guessed it pretty good, didn't he? At Corrente, Hugh offers this evaluation of the speech:
I think that many thought that the Cat Food Commission had died an ignominious and well deserved death, but I keep coming back to David Addington, Cheney's Cheney, and his line,
We're going to push and push and push until some larger force makes us stop
Kleptocrats never give up, ever. Maybe someday they will all find themselves hanging from lampposts à la Mussolini but until then they are going to keep pushing and pushing and pushing. So the Cat Food Commission was never going to go away. Obama was going to keep bringing it back no matter what. The same could be said for Social Security. Obama has always had it in his sights. He will go after it. It is only a question of when and how.
Protect the middle class? This said by the guy who has done everything he can to destroy the middle class in order to enrich the kleptocratic elites. Investment in the future? What investment? They are disinvesting, that is looting, everything they can. If there were any such investment, it only exists because A) the kleptocrats overlooked it or B) they haven't figured out how to loot it, yet. These two statements bracket Obama's pledge to seniors so you can decide for yourselves just how much that promise is worth. A tinker's damn comes to mind.Of course the Cult of St. Barack is getting high off the fumes from his ass. That's what they do.
